The Night Before Halloween by Natasha Wing

I have a really cute Halloween book that I love. It’s called The Night Before Halloween by: Natasha Wing. It is such a fun book. Jacob loves it because of the rhyming and the cute pictures, I love it because it cracks me up. It is a lot of fun, it goes along with the rhyming like:

“‘Twas the night before Halloween, and all through the house,
All the creatures were stirring, except for the mouse.
The monsters had gathered to plan and prepare,
For the trick-or-treaters who soon would be there….”

A very clever and fun book. I love it.

Don’t you want to read it?! I do. In fact, I think I want to buy it!

My Teacher for President October 27, 2008

My Teacher for President by Kay Winters

Cute, cute book!! This book is written through the eyes of a 2nd grader who thinks that his teacher would be a perfect nominee for President of the United States. He portrays her as a hero, just like the President. The story-line is very simple, and the pictures really tell the story. It helps explains a little about what the President does. I would recommend this for 2nd grade and up (although don’t underestimate the younger group!). Happy Election!

Let Kevin Lewis's Runaway Pumpkin inspire your own pumpkin race.

The Runaway Pumpkin by Kevin Lewis

This is a must-read for Halloween and definitely a favorite! This book is about a giant runaway pumpkin that thumps and bumps into everything and everyone in its path. Each encounter leaves the family thinking of something yummy that Granny makes. Do they get their yummy surprises? And what happens to that runaway pumpkin?

Choosing books October 21, 2008

Through the years, I’ve had the question asked to me numerous times in various ways: “How do you choose books?” “When you walk into a bookstore, how do you know which book to buy or even to look at? I get so overwhelmed!” “What do you look for in a book?” Now I’m not a pro by all means, but this is what I do (and I actually had to reflect on this for a moment because it’s so natural for me now).

The first thing I look for is the pictures. Books that have simple pictures for little ones, books that are super colorful (for the most part) for older ones. Pictures are KEY when picking out a picture book. If it’s attractive to you, it more than likely will be for them, too. Here’s an easy find: Any book that has a Caldecott Award is going to have unique pictures. That’s what the Caldecott Award is for: pictures. I always teach my students about this, because you know you’ll get a book with amazing pictures that way.

The second thing I look for is the storyline. If it’s interesting to you, it’ll be interesting for them. I shared a favorite with my son earlier today, and we had a blast talking about the funny things that were going on in the story. I found the book silly so he did, too.

I have to put a plug in here for non-fiction. I think we, as adults, avoid reading non-fiction to our children because we’re afraid it’ll be over their heads. I say, never underestimate your child’s ability to understand something; sometimes you just have to explain it in simpler terms. I always try to introduce kids to big words or adult cliche’s. It expands their vocabulary in many ways. And I have discovered through the years, that children LOVE non-fiction. They love the pictures, which are usually photographs, more than anything. And if you shop around a bit, you can find non-fiction books made especially for the younger clan (under the age of 8). Kids are like sponges and soak things up; they love learning how the world works. Introduce them to lots of different things. You may find a new interest this way (I have seen kids who thought they were only interested in cuddly animals soon discover that they loved frogs; and the life-cycle of a frog is so fascinating anyway).

So, I hope this helps a little. I’m not sure I shared anything novel, but maybe it’ll help you in your search for the perfect book.

Halloween Bugs by David Carter

This is a Halloween pop-up book about bugs. Behind each spooky door is a new, creepy, crawly creature to meet! Lots of fun flaps to flip and pop-up surprises!

David Carter has done many of these, including some for various holidays. They are always a favorite among the children I know.

Just so you know…

If you’re interested in purchasing any of these books for your own personal library, you can click on the picture and it will take you to a site where you can buy them–either Barnes and Noble, Scholastic, or Amazon (at this point).

There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Bat! (Paperback) ~ Lucille... Cover Art

There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat! by Lucille Colandro

This is a version of the “old lady who swallowed a fly” song, but with a Halloween twist! She swallows all sorts of Halloween things just to yell, “Trick or treat!” at the end. Lots of rhyming and repition, which is fun for kids to “read” along with you.

As a side note, there are a bunch of these by this same author. I really like the winter one and will post that one around Christmas.

The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams

This little old lady who is not afraid of anything gets the scare of her life in this story! But she solves this problem in a unique way, showing kids that there is always a solution to any problem; sometimes you just have to be creative. Repetitive text that is fun for kids to say with you, such as “shake, shake” or “nod, nod.”

Why? October 14, 2008

I have a dear friend who mentioned to me one day that she would love it if I would share my top 20 favorite children’s books of all time. Now to me, that was quite an undertaking! My top 20?! I don’t think I could do it! I have over 4 bookshelves full of books, as well as baskets all over my house (and although I don’t want to admit it, we also have boxes full in storage). How do you choose 20?!

In talking with family about this request of hers, I came up with the idea that I would make a blog about it. My plan is to post a favorite book each week. There will be nothing special about these, just a book I was thinking about or reading with my own children (though I will be focusing on picture books). I don’t claim to be a good writer so the reviews aren’t “professional,” just a simple summary.

My hope is that you may find a new favorite!
