Book Cover

On Noah’s Ark by Jan Brett

The classic story of Noah’s Ark told through the eyes of his granddaughter, whose job is to keep the peace between the animals. Beautiful illustrations, as always.

A Week of Jan Brett: The Three Snow Bears

This week I will be honoring one of my favorite authors, Jan Brett . Check back daily for a new book.

Three Snow Bears

The Three Snow Bears by Jan Brett

This is a version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. I love to compare and contrast versions with children. Jan Brett’s version is STUNNING!!! The pictures are breathtaking and true Jan Brett-style. The story takes place in an igloo, where a curious Inuit girl meets three snow bears. The sidebars show you what the bears are doing while Aloo-ki is exploring their home. What happens when they come face-to-face?

A Week of Jan Brett: Gingerbread Friends

Gingerbread Friends by Jan Brett

The gingerbread baby loves the house that Matti made for him, but he’s a little lonely. One day, while Matti goes out to play with his friends, the gingerbread baby decides to go find his own. He is in for a big surprise though! Does the lonely gingerbread baby find some friends? Or is he destined to be lonely the rest of his life?!

I believe this is one of her newer books, which is a lot of fun! This is the sequel to the Gingerbread Baby that I reviewed yesterday. The last page literally pops out of the book! The kids LOVE it!

A Week of Jan Brett: Gingerbread Baby

Gingerbread Baby by Jan Brett

This is my favorite version of the gingerbread man story! A young boy named Matti and his mother make a gingerbread man, but when Matti can’t wait for the whole eight minutes, he peeks, only to have his gingerbread baby escape from the oven! The gingerbread baby runs through the town, until he meets his match. The last page has a flap to lift revealing what happened to that gingerbread baby.

Throughout the story, there are pictures along the sidebar telling another aspect of the story. Most children don’t follow that storyline the first time, so it’s fun to point it out and read the story again making sure to watch what’s going on back at home while the gingerbread baby is being chased.

What a fun, fun story! For more fun, check out Jan Brett’s website. She has coloring sheets (which can be made into puppets) and activities for many of her books, including this one.

A Week of Jan Brett: The Mitten

This week I will be honoring one of my favorite authors, Jan Brett . Check back daily for a new book.

Book Cover

The Mitten by Jan Brett

When Nicki drops one of his snow-white mittens in the snow, he doesn’t even notice! It’s not long before some woodland creatures discover it and crawl inside to get warm, each one getting progressively bigger. What happens to that snow-white mitten?

Check out my article at Blissfully Domestic for some fun activities to supplement the reading.

Snow Family

Snow Family by Daniel Kirk

This is a really cute book about a group of snow children, who come to life. They love to make mischief though. One day, they meet a real-live boy named Jacob. Through a series of events, he realizes that the snow children don’t have any parents to keep them in line. So, at the end of the story, he builds them a set of snow parents. The pictures are big and colorful; the storyline rhymes. A fun book for winter!

Penguin Book: Without You

I apologize for the lack of posting in December. I had every intention of doing it, but things came up, including an unplanned, early vacation… So, here’s to a new beginning!

Without You

Without You by Sarah Weeks

This is a book about the life of the emperor penguin. The words are the lyrics to a song (CD included), but the pictures tell the real story. This book leads to lots of discussion about penguins. For example, did you know that the daddy penguin watches the egg while the mommy looks for food?
