Cute book about weather and seasons. It talks about the different seasons and the clothes you wear during each. Fun, simple pictures! Great for discussion.

You Are Special March 25, 2009

If I had to choose a favorite children’s book, this would probably be it. I love the message, and kids “get it.” After our first reading, my son looked at me, and said, “What makes me special, Mom?” “Because you’re you.”

You Are Special (Wemmicks Series) by Max Lucado: Book Cover

You Are Special by Max Lucado

The Wemmicks in Wemmicksville each have a box of star stickers and a box of dot stickers. They spend their days giving each other stickers–stars if they’re good at something, dots if they’re not. Well, one day, Punchinello meets a Wemmick with no stars or dots; they just don’t stick. Punchinello asks her secret, and she tells him. What follows is life-changing for Punchinello, as he begins to realize that it doesn’t matter what others think of him, but of what his creator thinks of him and of what he thinks of himself.

What more could you ask for in a children’s book?

Clever Tom and the Leprechaun: An Old Irish Story

Clever Tom and the Leprechaun by Linda Shute

Tom hears leprechauns tapping in the woods and is lucky enough to catch one! The leprechaun agrees to show Tom where his gold is hidden, in exchange for his freedom. He takes Tom on a long walk to a field of boliauns (yellow-flowered weeds) and tells Tom that his gold is buried beneath a particular one. Tom marks the plant with his red garter and makes the leprechaun promise not to remove it while he goes home to get his spade. When he returns, he finds that every plant is marked with a red garter! He digs under the plant where he thought he put his marker, but finds nothing. He digs all night, but to no avail. Years pass… Tom continues to carry his spade with him, in the hopes that the next time he catches the leprechaun, he will have his fortune made!

No, David! by Shannon: Book Cover

No, David! by David Shannon

Love this book!! It is written from a child’s perspective–even the pictures are drawn like a child’s. David always feels like his mom is telling him no, but in the end, he realizes that she truly does love him. Simple, simple story-line. Kids really relate to this story and love it!

Dr. Seuss Day! March 2, 2009

Filed under: Author Study, Dr. Seuss — ad65shorty @ 8:45 am

March 2nd is Dr. Seuss’ Birthday, and what a fun day it is for teachers!!! We always spent the day honoring one of the greatest authors of all time by doing various, fun activities with our students. He is one author they all know.

I will not be posting a specific book today, as all of his books are wonderful. Instead, I will be posting a couple of activities I did with my own children in honor of the day.

We had a yummy lunch of green eggs and ham. I simply put a bit of food coloring in with the scrambled eggs and add ham. It looks yucky, but is actually very good!

We also made some simple “Cat in the Hat” hats, made with cardstock and colored by my children.

Very simple but fun activities to supplement the reading. There are so many things you can do! You just have to be creative!

What is your favorite Dr. Seuss book?

There Was a Cold Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow by Lucille Colandro

We’re having spring weather here, but I had to post just one more winter favorite! I posted another similar book back in October also by Lucille Colandro and promised you then that I would tell you about this one, so here goes!

This is another twist on the “there was an old lady” song, but this time, the cold lady swallows some snow and a pipe and some coal…  At the end, she hiccups a snowman! Another great book for predicting, as well as for rhyming.
