Planting a Rainbow

Planting a Rainbow by Lois Ehlert

This is such a cute book about the process of planting a garden. From each seed will sprout a plant with a different color, or a rainbow. What a great way to teach/reinforce colors! The pictures and storyline are very simple, which makes it great for young children.

Wouldn’t it be fun to plant your own rainbow? Take your children to your local gardening store and have them help you pick out plants for each color of the rainbow. Then go home, plant them, and watch them grow all summer long!!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar April 13, 2009

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle: Book Cover

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

A tiny caterpillar pops out of his egg one morning and is very hungry. He eats through all kinds of food, only to end up with a stomach ache. He then eats through a leaf and feels much better. Next, he turns into a cocoon, and then a beautiful butterfly!

I love this book because it shows the lifecycle of the butterfly in a fun way! There are actually holes in the book where the caterpillar has “eaten.” So cute!

Side notes:

1. When I checked Eric Carle’s website a couple of weeks ago, I discovered that this is the 40th Anniversary of this book! Libraries and bookstores are doing all sorts of fun things, and Eric Carle has released a special version of this book! How cool is that!

Easter Book April 5, 2009

Muncha Muncha Muncha

Muncha! Muncha! Muncha! by Candace Fleming

This is such a cute book!! I actually have it on tape, and the guy who reads it has such a great voice. But, even without the tape, this book is so fun! Mr. McGreely has dreamed of having a garden, and finally plants one, only to have three night-time visitors. “Tippy-tippy-tippy pat! Muncha! Muncha! Muncha!” The next morning, Mr. McGreely finds his sprouts gnawed, and he is not happy! So he builds a wire fence. That night again, “Muncha! Muncha! Muncha!” So he builds a tall wooden wall… You get the idea! Who will win?! Mr. McGreely or the rabbits?!

I love this book for many reasons. First of all, it’s just plain fun! Kids love the humorous storyline and the pictures. If they’re observant, they’ll notice the rabbits watching Mr. McGreely each day as he builds a new structure to keep them out. There is a lot of repetition, which is a great reading skill, and saying, “Muncha! Muncha! Muncha!” is so fun! This is also a great book for predicting. I hope you enjoy it as much as the children in my life have!
