CinderHazel: The Cinderella of Halloween

by Deborah Nourse Lattimore

Summary:

From the back: “You’ve probably heard the story of Cinderella, that beautiful girl who hated being dirty and dressed in rags. Well, you won’t find her at the Witches’ Halloween Ball…” This story is about Hazel, the witch who loved to be dirty. But will the Prince fall in love with someone so filthy?!

Obviously, a twist on the classic story. I love exposing my children to different versions of stories. Great for comprehension: What is the same? What is different? Which do you like better? Why?

This one is really fun and cute! And even my son likes to read it!

Say Boo! by Lynda Graham-Barber: Book Cover

Say Boo! by Lynda Graham-Barber

This is a really cute book about a little ghost who can say, “Whooo” and “Moo,” but not “Boo.” Will he get it right in time for Halloween?

My kids LOVE this book! It’s a fun one for them to read-along with saying the different tries at “Boo.”

The Night Before Halloween by Natasha Wing

I have a really cute Halloween book that I love. It’s called The Night Before Halloween by: Natasha Wing. It is such a fun book. Jacob loves it because of the rhyming and the cute pictures, I love it because it cracks me up. It is a lot of fun, it goes along with the rhyming like:

“‘Twas the night before Halloween, and all through the house,
All the creatures were stirring, except for the mouse.
The monsters had gathered to plan and prepare,
For the trick-or-treaters who soon would be there….”

A very clever and fun book. I love it.

Don’t you want to read it?! I do. In fact, I think I want to buy it!

This is a must-read for Halloween and definitely a favorite! David Carter has done many of these, including some for various holidays. They are always a favorite among the children I know.

There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Bat! (Paperback) ~ Lucille... Cover Art

There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat! by Lucille Colandro

This is a version of the “old lady who swallowed a fly” song, but with a Halloween twist! She swallows all sorts of Halloween things just to yell, “Trick or treat!” at the end. Lots of rhyming and repition, which is fun for kids to “read” along with you.

As a side note, there are a bunch of these by this same author. I really like the winter one and will post that one around Christmas.

The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams

This little old lady who is not afraid of anything gets the scare of her life in this story! But she solves this problem in a unique way, showing kids that there is always a solution to any problem; sometimes you just have to be creative. Repetitive text that is fun for kids to say with you, such as “shake, shake” or “nod, nod.”
